Tending the Temple
By Kevin Vost, Shane Kapler, and Peggy Bowes

January 8 - Blessed Angela of Foligno (1248-1309)
Put off your former nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
- Ephesians 4:22-24

The more perfect a man is, the more earnestly doth he endeavor to do that which is desired, ordained, and counseled of God.
- Blessed Angela of Foligno

This wife and mother of 13th century Italy has much to teach us today. Absorbed in pursuit of social status, accumulation of wealth, and illicit pleasures of the flesh, it was not until around the age of 40, and shortly before the deaths of her husband and children, that she cast off her old nature and sought to live as a true child of God.

Under the spiritual direction of the early Franciscans, Angela sold her property, formed a religious community, and cared for the poor. Her heart and mind devoted now to God, at the advice of her spiritual director, this spiritual late-bloomer recorded her visions and meditations, becoming known as “The Teacher of Theologians.” Her writings include The Book of Visions and Instructions and The Book of Divine Consolation of the Blessed Angela of Foligno.

Exercise: Ask yourself today, am I glorifying God or only myself in my body? Does my clothing adorn my body with modesty and grace, or does it invite others to see me only as a body? Am I seeking status in the eyes of men, or in the eyes of God? Am I sufficiently grateful for the gift of my own family? What little thing can I do today to show them how I love them, to instruct and encourage them to overcome worldly temptations, to honor their own bodies, to become holy, perfecting their minds and wills as sons and daughters of God?
